Project Brief: Creating An Open Plan Hallway
1
Having recently completed a 2 story extension for our clients, they came to us for ideas on how to transform the existing hallway leading into the new open plan extension.
The current layout was very dark, enclosed and tunnel like all the way from the front door leading through the hallway and it didn’t flow well at all.
Pre Planning: Bringing Trades Together
With the clients keen on our ideas from the site consultation we went away and started liaising with our structural engineer regarding the removal of the load bearing wall.
Once we had structural plans we were able to go to the steel manufacturer and get a goal post system designed and manufactured. We created a schedule of works for the project as well as a method for installation to ensure the project run smoothly.
The project went beyond the typical scope for a staircase renovation but anything is possible with a well executed plan.
Client Liaison: Presenting Ideas & Working Together
Having suggested our ideas of removing a load bearing wall to open up the staircase which allowed light to pour through from the front door, as well as the velux over the staircase into the hallway they were very keen to proceed.
Our main points of liaison involved ensuring they fully understood every stage of the project in particularly the main structural aspects, as this would form the new staircase and landing design that would be critical in the finished project.
We also ensured they fully understood the disruption and we explained how our method of installation would limit this as much as possible whilst also ensuring the staircase was safe to use during the works.
Installation: Structural Changes To Create New Flow
2
Install began with structural preparation involving installation of acrow and strong boy props, to provide support whilst the load bearing wall was removed.
With the existing wall removed and the site cleared we moved onto phase two, which was to install the new steel goalpost system that would take the load of the 2nd floor and create the new open staircase design.
With the use of a genie lift we safely hoisted the steel into place and secured before plastering commenced.
With the structural elements now completed we were able to focus on the renovation of the staircase, we installed new solid oak Newel posts, handrail and spindles and we also overclad the existing stair strings in oak veneer before using Osmo Oil in a satin finish to complete the transformation.
The Finished Project: A Timeless Staircase Transformation
3
Our clients were delighted with the finished project, commenting on how spacious it made the entire home feel, it also allowed more natural light to flow through making the décor look brighter and fresh.
The oak staircase will be forever timeless and compliments all styles and colours well. We were glad we were able to bring our clients goals to life through careful planning and working together with our trades and engineers.
Furthermore, the project has not only met but exceeded our clients’ expectations in terms of both functionality and aesthetics. The seamless installation process and the high-quality materials used have ensured that the staircase is not only a visual focal point but also a durable and lasting feature of the home.
The positive feedback from our clients reaffirms our commitment to delivering exceptional results and highlights the importance of collaboration and meticulous attention to detail in achieving outstanding outcomes.
