Project Brief: The Second Life Of A 40 -Year- Old Staircase
1
Our clients came to us for advice on how we could bring a second life to their existing staircase in their family home they’d lived in for over 40 years.
The existing staircase was very bland and dark and due to it being a townhouse it occupied a very large part of the home including through the 1st floor living room.
The homeowners knew they wanted something that not only looked smarter but also made the home feel brighter and fresh, what they didn’t know was how this would be achieved and what was possible
Pre Planning: Hand-Selecting Materials & Design Ideas
With my clients positive of what they ultimately wanted to achieve but being unsure of what the options were for the finer details, I went away and put together several combinations of styles and materials of items that I thought would work well together from my time spent with them on our initial design consultation.
Due to the nature of the two story staircase I was unable to fully remove two of the larger structural newel posts, this wasn’t a problem but it required a well thought out plan of how to achieve the desired look while keeping the posts intact.
I worked round this by sourcing an “Oak Overclad Kit’ which was a hollow Oak newel post that I would be able to scribe and adjust on site accordingly over the top of the existing post to match the newly fitted solid posts I would fit.
Client Liaison: Presenting Ideas & Working Together
I arranged another meeting with my clients and presented my style combinations to them for some initial feedback, as well as explaining my reasoning for selecting each style and any possible drawbacks and features of each option.
Our clients were particularly in love with one of my options presented so we approved this and refined exact figures. Having never had a project of this scale done before I made sure that they were aware of exactly how the project would unfold including lead times and the full on-site process.
To ensure transparency and build trust, I also provided them with a detailed project timeline and regular update intervals. This way, they could stay informed about each phase of the project and any potential adjustments that might be necessary along the way
Installation: Bringing Everything Together
2
The day finally came that our clients could finally say goodbye to the staircase that had been making their hallway seem dreary for 40 years, we began by protecting all the carpets throughout the work areas and then started ripping out the existing stair parts.
Due to the staircase being in a two-story home and our clients also being elderly it was important to complete the install in a way that meant the staircase was safe at all times, we did this by only working on one section of the staircase at a time which meant it was left fully functioning and safe at the end of each day.
As the works progressed our clients became increasingly excited as they watched the staircase transform into something completely different. Once the woodwork had been installed, we offered advice on different oil finishes for the oak work, having gained the trust of our clients we were asked if we could also undertake the oiling process as an extra, which of course we were more than happy to help with to fully complete the renovation.
The Finished Project: A Timeless Staircase To Brighten The Home
3
Our clients could not believe that they finally had a brand new staircase that enhanced the overall feel of the entire home, whilst also making the property feel bigger and brighter, and all without completing any structural works or disruption to the rest of the home at all.
This project is potentially one of our most eye-catching transformations and the two story staircase is such an incredible addition to the family home.
The clients were particularly impressed with how seamlessly the new staircase integrated with the existing decor, creating a harmonious blend of classic and contemporary styles. This project stands as a testament to our commitment to excellence and our ability to transform ordinary spaces into extraordinary living environments.
