Affordable Staircase Renovation: Oak Double Bullnose Feature Staircase Installation
Welcome to RG Carpentry & Construction Ltd, we are a carpentry-led business based in Chelmsford and working throughout Essex who specialise in high spec staircase design and installation and staircase renovation.
We work on all aspects of staircase projects including brand new staircase installation as well as restoration and renovation of existing staircases to give the home a brand new feature.
We can supply and fit all styles of staircase from traditional oak and solid wood spindle designs through to modern staircases with glass or metal balustrades
Project Brief: Creating A Traditional Themed Oak Staircase
1
As part of a wider project on this property which involved a full renovation incorporating very traditional and intricate styled wood work I was tasked with designing a staircase which created a great feature for the centre of the home which complimented the other areas of woodwork we were introducing which included “Book Room Green” wall panelling and Oak flooring.
Pre Planning: Hand Selecting Materials & Design Suggestions
It was crucial the staircase continued with the traditional styled theme throughout the property, so we sourced solid oak handrails and stepped spindles which went well with the stepped mouldings used on the Art deco panelling.
We then provided three different samples on oil for the oak to select which one best worked with the Little Greene – Book Room Green that was being used to paint the panelling.
Client Liaison: Presenting Ideas & Working Together
We provided options and ideas to our client with our suggestions and explained why we believed they would work well together.
The staircase design was presented via a CAD design which helped us pitch our ideas to be visualised by our clients.
As well as this we were able to provide the oil samples on some oak offcuts so that a decision could be made for the perfect finishing of the oak work.
Installation: The Two Stage Install Process
2
The installation was completed in two parts due to it being the full staircase installation. This included a “1st fix” which was the install of the actual staircase itself with the treads, risers and newel posts, which was needed for access on site prior to plastering.
We carefully protected the newel posts, treads and risers in protective foam and waterproof sheeting to prevent any damage. The “2nd fix” was the latter stages of the project once all plastering had been done and all large items were loaded upstairs, this involved installation of the solid oak handrail and spindles, as well as newel post caps and finishing touches.
We then sanded down all of the woodwork and prepped before finishing with the clients choice of oil which was “Osmo Polyx Satin Clear” this not only protects the Oak from dirt and damage but it also enhances the colour of the oak by bringing out and enhancing the natural colours and grain.
The Finished Project: A Luxurious Feature Staircase
3
A truly incredible looking staircase, our patience and efforts in hand selecting the perfect items to bring together in creating this feature staircase really paid off.
The imposing look with the double feature step, and the colours of the oiled oak against the spray finished wall panelling, works even better than we imagined. The staircase brings a very magnificent and luxurious feel to the hallway and landing which you don’t get in most homes.
Our clients were again very impressed with the finished product and our commitment to working together to capture and improve on their exact ideas.
