Project Brief: Transforming a 20-Year-Old Kitchen

1

My client reached out to me to help fulfil her dream of a full kitchen renovation, which she had been waiting to do for almost 20 years. The existing kitchen was very dark and worn and formed a long, thin galley-style kitchen.

The client had specific requirements for her new kitchen, including underfloor heating, a new window for natural light, and tiled flooring, and she was in love with the Helmsley Kitchen from DIY Kitchens but was unable to design or plan it herself as they are a supply-only company.

She was looking for a company that could design, supply, and project manage the entire project, and I was more than happy to help.

Pre-Planning: Detailed Kitchen Design Consultation

The pre-planning phase consisted of taking a very precise scope of work after a design consultation with the homeowners.

I worked closely with my kitchen designer to provide detailed CAD drawings to present to my clients to help them visualize how their new space would work.

The benefits of working with a design team are that you can create a bespoke kitchen tailored to your exact needs, built around how you plan to use the space so that everything is ergonomic.

I booked a second design consultation with the clients to present the first round of drawings and discuss if any changes were needed. My designer and I came up with some improved ideas from the original scope, which I explained to the clients.

Client Liaison: Collaborative Design Process

They were thoroughly impressed; this was a very satisfying moment as it opened up the clients’ minds to areas they had overlooked. I took a second brief of notes with the new requests and went back to my designer to revise the working drawings.

The clients were happy to proceed with the revised drawings, so we signed these off for approval and I provided an accurate quote for the project, which was approved.

Once the initial deposit was received, I booked all deliveries of materials and trades and formed a Schedule of Works, detailing day-by-day who was booked in and what they would be doing, as well as their contact details.

I believe this is a crucial part of any project as it builds trust between myself and the client and allows them to feel comfortable and make plans around the work.

With the Schedule of Works in place, we began by delivering a skip to the site and removing the existing kitchen. This was followed by the electrical and plumbing first fixes, which involved a full rewire to current regulations and the installation of electric underfloor heating as well as plumbing alterations. After replastering the room, we retiled the floor with Victorian-style tiles in a mid-green and white pattern. Next, the cabinetry was delivered and installation began. The kitchen was a traditional in-frame shaker style and featured some intricate cornice detail, which really finished the kitchen well. Once the cabinetry was installed, it was time for the quartz worktops to be templated. I had pre-scheduled the entire job to ensure this ran smoothly and prevented any delays. The templates were taken and returned to be installed the following week. The kitchen's second fix took place, involving connecting all the appliances, and the final step of the project was the completion of the decoration. carpenter chelmsford

The Finished Project: Exceeding Expectations

Final sign-off and handover were completed after a visual inspection with the clients, and they were delighted with the finished project.

It was flattering to hear that I had far exceeded their expectations with the high standard of finish as well as capturing their exact vision and bringing everything to life without compromise.

The project ran to schedule and within budget, which was a testament to the attention to detail laid out in the project planning stage.
