Project Brief: Crafting a Unique Traditional Hicks Blue Inframe Shaker Kitchen
1
Having a keen interest in traditional and extravagant woodwork and cabinetry, this project brief was a perfect match for me.
The brief was simple yet precise: to create a high-spec in-frame shaker kitchen in the style of Humphrey Munson, featuring as many bespoke custom features and intricate details as possible.
The goal was to create a one-of-a-kind kitchen that friends and family would be envious of and unable to replicate. I was entrusted to bring several of my own ideas to this project, which included creating a custom mantel feature to house the hob extractor and designing custom post details for the island.
Pre-Planning: Detailed Kitchen Design Preparation
Before the design process began, I spent a considerable amount of time studying the style of kitchen I was expected to achieve.
I created several design boards, merging different aspects of designs and colour palettes to finalise the vision. The main kitchen cabinetry was sourced from a bespoke in-frame kitchen supplier, featuring real oak veneer carcasses, solid tulipwood face frames and doors, and solid oak dovetail drawer boxes.
The kitchen was designed according to the scope, allowing me to introduce my custom ideas seamlessly.
Client Liaison: Ensuring Design Continuity
A schedule of works is critical to any large project, and this kitchen was part of a wider renovation involving the entire house.
This allowed us to provide style ideas that complemented the rest of the house, including brushed gold knurled cabinet handles to match the internal door handles.
We also designed and styled the custom mantel and island to continue the Art Déco theme, providing continuity to the property and a truly luxurious feel.
Installation: Precision and Attention to Detail
2
Before the installation began, all doors, end panels, and accessories were sent to the spray booth to be finished with a 2-part PU paint in “Little Greene – Hicks Blue.” Once the spray finish was fully cured, the site installation began.
The cabinetry was installed, and the custom mantel was made and installed on-site, along with fitting the Art Déco coving around the top of the mantel and forming a two-tier cornice section. This created added depth and detail, making the mantel a feature of the house as requested in the project brief.
Once the cabinetry and custom woodwork were installed, the worktop template was taken, manufactured off-site, and returned for installation the following week. Plumbing and electrical second fixes followed shortly to connect all appliances, which were Samsung throughout.
The full double butler sink was perfectly complemented by a Lusso Stone flex tap finished in brushed gold, which was one of the most commented-on parts of the kitchen.
Finally, the custom mantel and woodwork on the island required on-site spraying, which was done with great patience and attention to detail to achieve a flawless look. The island skirting matched the internal skirting boards but at a reduced depth, and the mantel was sprayed in a two-tone finish consisting of “Little Greene – Silent White Pale” and “Little Greene – Rolling Fog.”
The Finished Project: A Unique, Bespoke Kitchen
3
The finished project could not have turned out better. The quality of the materials used was matched by the attention to detail our team applied during installation.
My favourite part of this project is its uniqueness; there is no other kitchen in the world like this one. It has been styled and created specifically for this home to meet the project brief and complement the rest of the property.
